'At Least My Mom Works!'
Nothing new to report outside of the summertime routine -- swim lessons, baseball times two sons and hunting for paid writing gigs. And swallowing bitter pills.
Tomorrow I take the kids on our city's Pacific version of the city bus, the Aqualink. For three bucks a pop, we get a postcard view of the harbor and an hour-long float around The Queen Mary and environs. 'Should be enough eye candy to keep the kids out of each other's faces.
At night I'll escape to the cafe to "work," something a few of my friends can't believe I do. Seems they can't take me seriously as an independent contractor and mom. I have to be one or the other.
Is the stay-home mom role I've played for nearly seven years throwing the haters off? Does my long run as a stay-home mom make my search for paid work less valid? Am I a less skilled worker now than before I bred? Do my emptied breasts and stretch marked belly make me less valuable in the writer's market?
Like taking care of my children isn't "work" enough in the first place, never mind paid work.
"What? You can't talk because you have to work? What work? Are you serious?"
How about this one from The Lawyer's guy friend: "At least my mom goes to work!" Yeah, all day. And she sees you for just long enough to feed you, bathe you and kiss you good night.
Just because I don't report to a dull office to write articles doesn't mean I'm screwing off at the cafe. That I should take your kid with me so you can go see a movie.

I know how you feel. I have to constantly ask my husband to take the kids for a bit so I can get writing done. I know he thinks blogging is just a hobby and fun, but I do get paid for one of my blogs, and I have deadlines to keep. I sometimes wish he'd take my "job" a little more seriously. I do blog for fun, but it does help our income a little, too.
This is why companies don't like telecommuters - there's this sense that because we're at home, we're not working. Ugh.
I have been a stay at homer for 5 years- I have my teaching credential and I am working on my Master's degree- to be totally honest- I could get a teaching job tomorrow and my family would be financially comfy- now we collect change from the couch to pay rent- BUT... I actually feel like I would be 'copping' out by returning to work- dealing with 150 hormonal teens, their parents, administrators, report cards, grading- all of that, to me, is much easier than doing what I do as a SAHM!! Do I sometimes wish that all I had to do was bathtime and ni-night? YES!! But what I wish most- that the work I did was recognized by somebody with the authority to cut me huge fat check!! I know I am appreciated and blah blah blah- but I want some of the SAHM stress relieved! Could somebody just pay me to do this?? By the end of this job I will be over qualified in the following: accountant, cook, maid, nurse, mediator, filer, refiler, hunter of all things, night vision specialist, expert retriever, bug catcher, chauffeur, feeling hider(can the kids see me cry because its just one of those days?)and stress smiler (that's the ability to smile when....you know the rest).

Or when people who know I try to write during the little freetime that I get with two kids -- especially in the summer -- call during naptime. And they say something like "I'm in the car going to a meeting and I'm bored, so I thought I'd call."
It actually doesn't happen much. Or maybe it does. I've had to turn off the phone.
Here too Christina...it is only now because he is starting to get his own web sites up and running, that he has realized I actually KNOW things.
That I have page rank makes him nuts..that I do make SOME money has made is real.
He works from home..is his own boss...his parents seem to think he is unemployed or something.
A man (or other mothers, for that matter) who doesn't value and appreciate an at home mom's ability to multi-task to the extreme just doesn't get it. My wife has been fully disabled for 5 years now, and I am a work@home (fulltime) employee of a major IT firm, dad, husband, caregiver, cook, cleaner, etc. and I can tell you - it's doable, although it's hard as hell. What I don't do much is sleep!
God bless you, every one! I DO APPRECIATE WHAT IT TAKES. So if they give you any crap, send em my way, and I will be glad to educate (or just leave them with the kids and a fulltime job for a week or two - that should do it as well).

I've been a SAHM for 8 years - and I'm writing (at least) 25 hours a week for a variety of projects, and my husband is just now starting to get it that what I do is a)valuable and b)actually work.
People never seem to understand that freelance writing is "real" work.
I worked at a full-time office job where I found out I was making less than a man who had 10 years less experience than me...because he had a family and NEEDED the money. Grrrr. Like I didn't?

I think it would be easier (back off, now, ladies) to just be at work all day instead of enduring the ceaseless heartache of leaving the house twice a day to work. I'm just teaching yoga, not hooking.

You enter a grey area unfortunately when you are an independent contractor and a mom because it doesn't fall into a neat package and people don't know what to make of it.
As a yoga teacher I am pretty much an independent contractor (as well as as a writer) so I know the vibe well... though luckily, living in SF keeps the haters away as being strange and living life in an unusual manner is the norm here!

I feel your pain. I am a full time SAHM, but I work 2 nights a week in the hospital when my son is sleeping. I get a kick out of people who seem to think that my job at night is so I can get a "break" from my toddler.
